  “What is that?” he asked quietly.

  Rae looked up in confusion as Samantha glanced down at the ring. Her face paled slightly and she angled it away from him, hiding it behind her back.

  “It’s nothing. Just finish the job, Devon. Then I’ll finally let you leave.”

  But Devon was done taking orders.

  A strange transformation was coming over him. An awakening similar to what had happened to Rae back at the diner. One by one, his features were coming back to life.

  Starting deep inside him…settling in his eyes.

  In a flash, the hands were gone. His knees came off Rae’s chest, and he stared down at her with the strangest mix of love and heartbreak she had ever seen.

  “Devon?” She stared up fearfully. Unwilling to trust. Unwilling to hope. “Is that—”

  A pair of warm lips came down over hers.

  …That’s you.

  A sigh of exhausted relief trembled through her as she wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. The weight of the last few days crashed over her and she buried her face in his neck, sobbing silently but without restraint. Completely unable to let him go.

  He wouldn’t have released her even if she’d tried.

  The second he was free of Samantha’s influence he lost all thought of her, turning his focus instead to the one person who mattered to him more than anyone in the world. The beautiful, bloodied girl crying in his arms.

  “Sweetheart, I’m so sorry,” he murmured, pulling her as tight as he dared while he alternated between kissing her hair and simply holding her. “I remember…I remember everything—”

  “It’s okay,” she whispered, clinging to him for all she was worth. “You’re back now. That’s all that matters. We’re together. We’re okay.”

  A door slammed somewhere in the distant background and a second later a car took off, screeching down the road.

  Rae lifted her head to peer weakly over Devon’s shoulder. “Samantha.” She tried to push to her feet. “She’s getting away—”

  “Careful, love.” Devon eased her back down, drawing her onto his lap. “She’s already gone. I can’t outrun a car. And I wouldn’t leave you for anything in the world right now.”

  A shuddering sigh shook Rae’s shoulders, and she collapsed against his chest.

  “I thought I was never going to get to talk to you again,” she murmured. “Not the real you, anyway. I thought that part of us was over. That we were going to have to start again—”

  “But we did.” Devon looked down at her in sudden wonder. “I…I fell in love with you. In every version of myself, even when you’ve been erased completely…I fall in love with you.”

  A rush of feeling flooded his eyes, burning so bright it was almost painful.

  “I want to get married.”

  She slowly lifted her head off his chest, trying to keep pace with his sudden shift in momentum. “We’re going to get married. As soon as we tell everyone, and set a date—”

  “You don’t understand, Rae.” He reached down and picked a sparkling diamond ring off the grass, a ring that Samantha had thrown down in disgust before fleeing the scene.

  With a trembling breath, he slipped it onto Rae’s finger instead. A flood of emotion shook him to the very core, but when he looked back up he had never been so sure.

  “I want to get married right now.”

  TUDOR COMPARISON:

  Aumbry House --A recess to hold sacred vessels, often found in castle chapels.

  Aumbry House was considered very special to hold the female students - their sacred vessels (especially Rae Kerrigan).

  Joist House -- A timber stretched from wall-to-wall to support floorboards.

  Joist House was considered a building of support where the male students could support and help each other.

  Oratory --A private chapel in a house.

  Private education room in the school where the students were able to practice their gifting and improve their skills. Also used as a banquet - dance hall when needed.

  Oriel -- A projecting window in a wall; originally a form of porch, often of wood. The original bay windows of the Tudor period. Guilder College majority of windows were oriel.

  Rae often felt her life was being watching through one of these windows. Hence the constant reference to them.

  Refectory -- A communal dining hall. Same termed used in Tudor times.

  Scriptorium -- A Medieval writing room in which scrolls were also housed.

  Used for English classes and still store some of the older books from the Tudor reign (regarding tatùs).

  Privy Council -- Secret council and "arm of the government" similar to the CIA, etc… In Tudor times, the Privy Council was King Henry's board of advisors and helped run the country.
