Chronicles of Angel Blurb
WHAT STARTED AS A NIGHTMARE turned into a fairytale.
Some might argue Angel Cross was doomed from the start. Born to a life of servitude and raised to be an instrument of death, the girl was never comfortable unless there was a gun in her hand.
Then she went and did the craziest thing of all...she fell in love.
While the rest of her friends slip into a simple routine of domesticated bliss and saving the world, Angel has a harder time finding her footing. Instead of explosives, she finds herself toting a car-seat. Instead of midnight homicides in Berlin, she finds herself sitting in back of the PTA.
An accidental touch of arson sentences her to Carter-appointed therapy, throwing a spotlight on all that dissonance, but things at the PC are growing rocky as well. Case files are being altered and prisoners are going missing. An inside-person may be working behind the scenes.
How long can she pull a thread before the whole thing unravels? Was such a venture destined to fail from the start? What happens if you realize happily ever after isn’t enough?

Chapter 1
When Angel Cross was five years old, her best friend was a toy rabbit.
It was utterly unremarkable, a floppy-eared plushy that had once been quite soft but had been picked up secondhand and was well-used by the time it was placed in her eager little arms. It had been a gift from her older brother. A token of affection to celebrate the day they’d come into each other’s lives. Her birthday, they’d called it. She’d carried it around every moment since.
The rabbit was tucked under her arm when she was playing in the graveyard, hopping from stone to stone. It was a dangerous gamble. She wasn’t supposed to go out in the daylight, she knew that lesson well. But the man who made those rules was gone, as he so often was, and with the silent daring of a child she’d taken her beloved stuffed animal and crept through the darkness out of her room.
The sun was shining, putting a flush in her pale cheeks. She was so rarely allowed to see it, the unfiltered brightness stung her eyes. She squinted ever so slightly, hopping along.
“Alice and Odessa...Jeremiah Pike.”
Her young heart might have belonged to the rabbit, but she had other friends as well. Their names had been carved into the stones that lived above her for as long as she could remember. She’d created faces and stories to go with each one, expanding them as the years dragged on.
Thomas O’Henry had 1,941 cats, which were assuredly buried beside him. Frederick and Vera liked to stay in the shade, while Meredith Montgomery had an infestation of mice.
“Take a left at Charlie, then all the way to Joyce.” She hopped along, mapping her route in a little sing-song chirp. “Stop at Mrs. Walters, for sweets and lemonade.”
A young boy stopped across the street, pointing with a sticky finger.
“Mummy...what’s that little girl doing?”
A set of frazzled-looking parents glanced towards the cemetery, seeing nothing out of the ordinary, until the lovely little girl leapt into view. One arm was held out for balance, while the other clutched at something that looked as though it might have been run over by a car.
“Bloody hell,” the father murmured before returning to his phone. “Was that a real rabbit?”
The woman continued to stare with a slightly unsettled expression, feeling her pulse begin to quicken as that lilting song drifted across the road. After a few seconds, she darted across herself.
“Sweetheart?” she called, waving a hand to catch the girl’s attention. “Do your parents know you’re out here by yourself?”
The child froze with a look of sheer panic, staring through the iron slats of the fence.
If daylight excursions had been forbidden, then speaking with strangers was on a level she’d never seen. That being said, a part of her simply couldn’t believe it was happening. In her entire life, she could remember speaking with just four people. Hearing just four names.
She glanced around the cemetery as if the question might be directed towards someone else, before venturing a tentative step forward. “I’m not by myself. I’m with my friends.”
Strange that the pretty lady couldn’t see it. They were lined up just behind.
The woman stared a moment in confusion, then her eyes drifted to the ancient tombstones littered across the grass. Her mouth dried and her skin tingled. For a fraction of a second, she was on the verge of calling for her husband across the street.
Then a heavy hand clamped down upon the girl’s shoulder.
“Get inside.”
Just two quiet words, but the girl jumped like she’d been struck by lightning. Her eyes went wide as saucers, while her face turned a particular kind of pale. A second later she was gone, leaving the rabbit in the grass behind her. In her terror upon being discovered, it had fallen from her arms.
Back into the tunnels. Back into the darkness.
She ran without breathing or stopping, silent tears flying off her cheeks. She never saw how the woman startled, falling into the shadow of a tall man. She never heard his charming deflections or saw the way his fingers fluttered as her memory was silently erased.
She had lost her rabbit. She had lost her greatest friend.
The punishment that night was worse than any she could remember. As it finished she’d been struck so hard across the face that her ears were ringing and she suddenly wondered, if like an empty seashell, she could somehow hear the sea. He left her crying on the floor of her room, though she’d already grown past such things. She cried that night until she no longer had any tears.
